Wellington Phoenix unveil new manager

By David Hadley - Friday, May 29, 2020 - 10:10:41 AM

Wellington Phoenix unveiled David Hadley as their new manager this morning following a five season gap since their last permanent manager was in place.

The Phoenix are days away from commencing their second season in Division C6 following relegation from Division B3 in season 36.

“We’re all looking forward to getting the season underway.” said Hadley outside Westpac Stadium. “The division is shaping up to be a two-horse race between us and Flamengo, unless another side can emerge from the pack to challenge either of us. Therefore it’s imperative that we get off to a positive start at St. Mirren in a week’s time if we are to put up any sort of challenge for the title.”

The Phoenix are rumoured to be deeply in debt with estimates that the club owes in excess of £10m. This will surely hamper Hadley’s efforts to bolster the squad and better their sixth place finish in the previous campaign.

However the Wellington-based club have managed to bring in two new signings in defenders Scott Durham and Vadim Bakhmurov, both on free transfers. “Scott and Vadim will strengthen our backline significantly.” Hadley commented at the training ground. “Both are experienced campaigners and especially Vadim coming over from C6 rivals Flamengo will provide us with key insights on their squad.”

Wellington have made a mixed start under Hadley, drawing 1-1 in their first outing against Hearts before a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Fulham last night. They will be hoping to fare better as they finish the European section of their pre-season tour against PSG on Saturday, before finishing their season 38 preparations in Japan facing A2 powerhouse Kashima Antlers.
