Old Faces Back at the Old Firm

By Kevin Beck - Tuesday, November 12, 2019 - 11:21:51 AM

Late last night, the green and white half of Glasgow completed two potentially significant pieces of business by recruiting reinforcements in key positions ahead of the new season. Both faces will be well known around Celtic Park!

First to arrive was goal sensation, Wendolin Hieck, who hit goal a game for The Hoops in his last two seasons with the club; helping to lift the ITN Cup, promotion to the Premier League, and secure safety in Celtic's first season back in the big time. Hieck, who will see out the remainder of his contract with Celtic, arrives in exchange for Celtic's next youth academy promotion, who will be promoted later this week and join Dundee Utd on a permanent basis.

Then shortly afterwards, former stopper, Qasim Ibrahim joined in a deal which sees Iranian hot shot, Nizam Tokuzarka, go in the opposite direction to Madrid. Ibrahim was key to Celtic's unbeaten B Level campaign and was the make weight in the Sergio Lanz deal in Season 33.

Both players add significant experience and strength to the squad and Beck was naturally delighted to bring both players home.

"The two positions on my list for the new season were the GK and AM positions. These are two key areas and areas which we have immense quality, but a little lack of experienced options. To bring Wendolin and Qasim back to the club and add options for the forthcoming season is great. Sadly, we lost young Nizam to Madrid, and we give up a potentially great youth player from the famous Celtic academy, but I felt these were acceptable sacrifices to add the quality we have to the squad.

Both deals looked dead in the water yesterday. Phil looked like he had decided to keep Hieck at Dundee Utd as he was looking for a cash sale, but the buy back block prevented us from buying Hieck outright. Richard wouldn't sell Ibrahim without a top experienced GK replacement coming in and I wasn't willing to wait beyond the end of this season with the increased risk of Ibrahim retiring. Thankfully, both deals got there in the end and I'm very pleased with the business.

Further deals are unlikely now, but you never know!"
